The Blue Room

The Blue Room is a patented system, designed by Third Eye Neurotech, primarily to treat phobias in children with autism. Since its initial design, the system has gone through multiple iterations and improvements. The latest version resides within the beautiful and historical Ushaw College located just outside of Durham. The treatment has been developed and tested in conjunction with Newcastle University and has proven to be very effective. If you, or someone you know is interested in accessing a treatment using the Blue Room, you can be referred to us via the NHS. Otherwise you can get in contact with us using the contact form on our Home page, or by emailing us at: [email protected]

How Effective is the Treatment?

In studies conducted at Newcastle University, nearly 45% of treatment recipients have been proven to be free from their phobias six months after receiving it. It has also been proven to be effective for adults.

When testing was carried out on adults, out of those tested, the treatment was shown to be effective on  62.5% of them. This suggests that the treatment is even more effective on adults, than children.

Read further details about the study here.

The treatment was so successful for one of our patients that, since their treatment they have completely conquered their fear of dogs. Watch this news report to see how an 11 year old boy overcame his fear to the point where his family now has a pet dog.

How Does the Treatment Work?

Once you have been referred to us for a Blue Room treatment by the NHS, the referrer will provide us with all the necessary details for your treatment. This includes details about your phobia – locations where it ocuurs, scenarios where it’s made orse, other triggers etc.

This information can then be used by us to build the scene for you to walk through in the Blue Room. Since we have already built scenes for previous treatments, it may be possible to use one of those for you too. We want you to have the best experience possible, so if that means building an entirely new scene just for you, it’s what we will do.

Once the scene is ready and you arrive at the Blue Room, a clinician will work with you to navigate through the scene. Depending on your phobia, there may be a variety of scenarios within a scene. For example if you’ve a fear of dogs, your scene could have a variety of size of dogs which your clinician can work through with you as they see fit.

Anyone who goes with you to the treatment will be able to monitor your progress through a camera in another room.

Take a look at this video to learn more in depth about the process,, if you’ve been considering the treatmet, we hope it’ll give you a good idea of what’s going to happen.

Industry Standard Software

We build the scenes for the Blue Room using industry standard video game development software. By using this software, we’re able to build the scenes extremely quickly, whilst still maintaining the high quality necessary for this application.

The system we use to navigate the scenes is something that everyone is familiar with – a touchscreen tablet. For the patients it can be just like controlling a video game, gamifying the treatment experience for them.

What do our Patients Think of the Treatment?

Harry’s mother said, “It is amazing to see how Harry now is with dogs. He loves our dog and whenever he sees others he’s happy if they approach him and he’ll stroke them. I am so glad that he took part in the Blue Room and that he’s had long-term effects from it. I would certainly recommend that other autistic children try this form of therapy as it involves no medication and has no side-effects.”

Harry Mainwaring, 11

By the end of the third session in the Blue Room, I was able to push open and go through all the doors presented to me in the virtual scene. Then I had to do it in real life. Before the sessions, when I was out and about, my support workers had to go through doors before me – after the sessions, I went through first. The Blue Room gave me back my independence.
